Hosts of the 4th edition of Nigeria Private Universities Games, Western Delta University, Oghara, beat Bishop Idahosa University 2-0 in the football event as the competition began at the Oghara Township Stadium, Delta State.

The game was preceded by an opening ceremony, where the state Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan charged the participating students to compete fairly. The governor, who was represented by chairman of the state sports commission, Amaju Pinnick, urged the students to shun any form of violence during the games.

A 24th minute goal from Tuoyo Inonene and another from Duke Adiji in the 47th minute earned the hosts maximum points.

In tennis, the hosts were not successful as Joseph Ayo Babalola University beat them in two sets.

Vice-Chancellor of WDU, Prof. Peter Hugbo, said his institution would not be desperate to win as hosts.

“We just want to show to others that you don’t need to be ten years or more to host befitting games. As you are aware, this university is new. It was established in 2008, but we enjoy standard facilities good enough to host such a big event.
