Johannesburg – A two day summit aimed at ending tensions between traditional leaders and councillors will be held in Umhlanga, Durban, said the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government on Sunday.

Spokesman Lennox Mabaso said the summit was aimed at finding lasting solutions and to define roles for involved parties.

“The majority of municipalities are rural based and the land ownership is within the jurisdiction of traditional leaders…

“When municipalities deliver services, traditional leaders have often raised concerns that councillors do not consult 1/8them 3/8 and they are being undermined,” said Mabaso.

He said development plans have been delayed because of the tension between traditional leaders and councillors.

The summit would start on Monday and would be attended by the Minister for Agriculture and Rural Development, Gugile Nkwinti. – Sapa
