Lokoja — There was pandemonium in Okene, Kogi State yesterday as four policemen attached to the Area Commander’s office were shot dead by a gang suspected to be armed robbers. It was also gathered that the hoodlums carted away four AK 47 belonging to the slain officers.

A source told Daily Trust that the police officers had earlier in the day intercepted a Golf car conveying 10 Ak 47 riffles. He said the owners of the guns escaped, leaving the driver and a female occupant of the car, who are now in police net. The source added that the deceased police men were ambushed by the robbers at Ahache junction along the Okene-Auchi road.

He said eight out of the 10 guns were part of the guns which were allegedly taken away from Kabba during last month’s robbery of a police station and bank.

It was gathered following the attack, the police attacked Ahache village, burning down a house suspected to be the hideout of the robbery suspects.

” In the attack, a 19 year old boy was hit by a stray bullet and he died while another boy suspected to a thug was also shot on the leg”, the source added.

Responding, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Ajayi Okansomi confirmed the incident, saying the police are doing their best to track down the perpetrators.

Okasanmi could not confirm the police attack on Ahache village, but said investigations are still on.
