Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish believes the reduction of Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney‘s international ban is ‘good news’ for England and football in general.
Rooney is now eligible to face Ukraine in the Three Lions’ last group match of Euro 2012 after his three-match ban was reduced to two games by Uefa.
Whilst McLeish suggested Rooney ‘deserves his luck’, he also thinks it’s good for the sport that one of England’s biggest stars will appear in Poland and Ukraine.
“I know world football and European football doesn’t want to see the best players missing at these big tournaments,” the Scotsman told reporters.
“I don’t think they’ve done it because of that necessarily, but they’ve shown a bit of leniency and I’m sure Wayne Rooney will repay it in kind.
“Everyone needs a wee bit of luck from time to time and it is good news for England.
“The tournament would love to see Rooney involved and all the top players involved.
“Like everyone else, Wayne cares, he’s passionate, and you want players to have that in your team. Rooney probably deserves his luck.”
