Nyantakyi wants Caf to fight for the rights of African players
Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi wants to lead a CAF campaign to end the perennial club versus country row ahead of Africa Cup of Nations of finals.
This follows claims by Manchester City defender Kolo Toure that English Premier League sides discriminate against African players who accept to play in the continent’s flagship event.
The decision of African players to leave their European club for Africa’s flagship tournament is hotly debated every two years when the competition is about to be held.
Some players suffer the consequences of defying their European clubs to play for their countries.Â
Nyantakyi, a CAF Executive member, wants the continent’s governing body to fight the issue and ensure that the right of African players are protected.
“It’s a very straight forward matter and I will personally take it up before the African Nations Cup,” Nyantakyi told local radio station Joy FM.
“I will draw the attention of the CAF president and the general secretary to deal with this issue so that the release of players will not be subjected to any unnecessary and illegal impediments.”
Ghana goalkeeper Sammy Adjei was denied a contract extension by Israeli side Ashdod Moaden FC after he defied the club’s orders to play at the 2008 finals on home soil.Â
