Former Argentina coach Diego Maradona hopes that countryman Carlos Tevez secures a move out of Manchester City to AC Milan in the January transfer window.

Maradona, currently coaching United Arab Emirates side Al Wasl, labelled the striker’s current situation in England as “unfortunate”, and thinks that a move to Italy will help him.

Milan recently agreed to personal terms with the player, though City boss Roberto Mancini seems to have scuppered the deal when he revealed that Tevez would only be sold permanently, not on loan.

“I hope that it’s true, that it goes ahead,” Maradona said. “I really hope this transfer takes place. I wish Carlos Tevez all the best. He should be back playing football.

“What has happened to him at Manchester City is unfortunate. If Milan actually sign him, they’ll be big winners. He’s an amazing footballer.

“He was one of the best performers when he played at Manchester United and for Manchester City.

“I hope he will be back on the pitch and playing football in Milan.”

Tevez hasn’t featured for the Citizens since allegedly refusing to warm-up during the 2-0 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich in September.

Earlier on Thursday, Inter president Massimo Moratti revealed negotiations with the player’s agent, although the Nerrazurri patron found terms unfavourable.

“I’m disappointed because the terms that we negotiated with the player, which I imagine are similar to that of Milan’s, we didn’t consider them acceptable,” the Inter president told the Gazzetta dello Sport.
