The ANC legislature caucus in KwaZulu-Natal welcomed the province’s improved audit opinions for the 2010/2011 financial year on Wednesday.
Spokesman S’khumbuzo Qwabe said auditor general Terrence Nombembe’s report was proof that the ANC led government’s pledge, to fight corruption and improve security on financial management was real.
On Tuesday, Nombembe said: “The significance of this summary is that we are beginning to see progress in the right direction.”
Five unqualified audits were recorded and eight departments had qualified opinions. No department received a disclaimer Ä which is regarded as the worst report.
Nombembe said the province needed to pay more attention to financial excellence, service delivery reporting and compliance to sustain positive audit opinions.
He suggested that government departments conduct monthly audits to avoid mistakes at the end of the financial year.
Qwabe said more work was needed to ensure all public institutions received clean audits.
“We therefore call on the legislature to maintain its effective and robust oversight role over the executive and must create a more focused monitoring system to ensure progress in terms of administration of finances in our friendly province.” – Sapa
