Police arrest 92 for substance abuse

    Johannesburg – A spokesperson for the Eastern Cape police, Mtati Tana, said on Sunday that 92 people had been arrested in East London over the weekend for crimes related to drug and alcohol abuse.

    He said among those arrested were 10 drunken drivers and three others for dealing in crack cocaine.

    Police concentrated on liquor outlets and searched suspicious people and vehicles at check points.

    Crack and powdered cocaine, tik tablets, six bompies of dagga and more than 25 litres of alcohol were found on some of the people arrested.

    Police also confiscated 20 knives, a stolen laptop, six cellphones, a wallet with R2 710, 40 fake DVD’s and an electrical generator.

    Tana said: “We will continue throughout the festive season to keep communities safe from crime.”
