Rwanda thumped Djibouti 5-2 on Friday to finish top of Group ‘A’ at the 2011 Cecafa Tusker Challenge Cup, while Ethiopia were eliminated from Group ‘C’ following a 1-1 draw with Malawi.

Rwanda were on the scoreboard in just three minutes through a Kamana Bokota strike. Djibouti however shocked the favoured Rwandese by leveling in the 24th minute through Ahmed Hassan who also gave Rwanda a 2-1 lead in the 33rd minute which lasted until half time.

However, in the second half, Rwanda shifted into a powerful gear attacking Djibouti relentlessly and Jean Baptiste Mugiraneza’s equalizer came in the 57th minute before hit man Olivier Karekezi was introduced to turn the match on its head.

The veteran hit a hat-trick in a span of 15 minutes for the big win.

Ethiopia’s 1-1 with Malawi saw Malawi through to the quarter finals with five points while Ethiopia prepared to leave for home despite being one of the teams judged to have played very skilful football in the tournament. The Ethiopians finished on only two points after a 1-1 draw with Sudan on Monday and being ambushed by Kenya in a 2-0 defeat.

The pool matches end this Saturday with do-or-die matches at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam when Kenya face Sudan in Group ‘C’ and Tanzania clash with Zimbabwe in Group ‘A’.
