Egypt’s Ambassador in London Hatem Seif el-Nasr said that Egypt’s re-election in the membership of the executive council of the UN International Maritime Organization (IMO) reflects the great confidence in its role in the organization.

In statements to MENA correspondent in London, Seif el-Nasr said that Egypt has retained its membership in the IMP since 1977, adding that it played a crucial role in setting up the organization in 1958.

A specialized agency of the United Nations with 169 Member States and three Associate Members, IMO is based in the United Kingdom with around 300 international staff.

IMO’s main task has been to develop and maintain a comprehensive regulatory framework for shipping and its remit today includes safety, environmental concerns, legal matters, technical co-operation, maritime security and the efficiency of shipping.
