NO FEWER than 30 states and volleyball teams have converged in Abuja for the first edition of the Samsung beach volleyball competition, which begins today at the Jabi Lake beach volleyball arena.

According to organisers of the competition, the competition, aside the states’ teams, other invited clubs would parade teams in both the male and female category of the tournament, which has N1 million as the prize money.

Speaking yesterday on the competition, President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVF), Habu Gumel, revealed that the federation would pay an undisclosed appearance fee to all the states and teams that have registered for the competition, just as he praised Samsung form identifying with the sport.

While calling on other corporate organizations to join hands with the federation in developing the game in the country, Gumel added that the body would compliment the prizes, which Samsung will give to the players and teams.

“The NVBF will not allow this kind gesture by Samsung in identifying with volleyball in the country to be in vain. We will in our own small way pay an appearance fee to all the participating teams and states, which have registered for the competition, as well as add to the winning prizes to be given by the sponsors.”

Earlier, head of Corporate Affairs of Samsung West Africa, Donald Etim, had promised that the partnership between the organization and volleyball in the country would make the beach volleyball championship a yearly event, adding that the prize money could be increased from the next edition.

He disclosed that winners would go home with cash prizes, as well as Samsung products worth N1 million.
