The Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Samia Yaba Nkrumah, has stated unequivocally that no one can force the party executives into a hasty and unprepared congress to elect a flagbearer.

According to her, the CPP is currently pre-occupied with reconstituting committees, embarking on membership drives as well as publicizing the party before it will consider going to congress to elect a flagbearer for the 2012 elections.

She said the executives have resolved to hold congress in the first quarter of next year and will not be forced by a minority to reverse that.

Speaking to Citi News after a press conference at the CPP headquarters, the Jomoro MP stated that the party ought to move in a gradual manner to enable it elect a flagbearer with an enviable character.

“We want a presidential candidate of integrity, sincerity and commitment. Someone who includes you in the party, someone who does not forget his code and we have those candidates. The future is bright for the CPP,” she said.

Meanwhile, a former flagbearer of the party, George Agudey, who was present at the press conference also stated that calls by the 2008 flagbearer Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom for an early congress is not the best way to go.

He said the party will, however, commit no wrong in expelling Dr. Nduom from the party if he misconducts himself.

“Going for an early congress would not help anybody, we need to have a strong party on the ground,” he said.

“There are rules governing our behavior and performance in life…if his conduct would call for expulsion from the party then he has brought that upon himself not anybody. .. Nduom is not bigger than the president.”
