At least six prisoners have escaped from a heavily fortified prison van carrying them from Doblo near Nsawam on Wednesday morning, eyewitnesses tell Citi News.
The whereabouts of the criminals are unknown.
Two of the prisoners have been rearrested, according to an eyewitness. The registration number of the jail van was given as WR 897 W.
Meanwhile Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons Service Courage Atsem has told Citi News, no such report of an escape has come to their knowledge.
He tells Citi News, “Our checks so far have revealed that no prisoner has escaped from the custody of prison officers.
“We also just heard the news report on air and we quickly had to check from our officers who were detailed to convey prisoners from Nsawam to court in Accra and our checks have revealed that no single prisoner has escaped from the custody of prison officers so we do not know where the escape is coming from.
“If there were any escapes at all today, they were not escapes from the hands of prison officers and for that matter prison custody.
“There are two things, there could be prisoners being escorted by police to Nsawam and there court be prisoners being escorted from Nsawam to court by Prison officers so we do not know which one the escape is coming from now”.
