President John Evans Atta Mills has assured the people of the Volta Region that he will not renege on the promises made to the region prior to the 2008 elections.

He reiterated that he would not take the support and love of the people for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for granted, so he would do everything to ensure that all the promises made were fulfilled.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic in Accra yesterday, the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Mr Koku Anyidoho, who conveyed the views of the President on recent developments in the Volta Region, said President Mills was aware of all the promises made to Ghanaians and in particular the Volta Region, and that he was putting measures in place to fulfil them.

Twelve NDC youth on last Wednesday clashed with the police when they protested against what they described as the slow pace of development in the area.

They contended that the promises made by President Mills had not been fulfilled and called for the heads of the Volta Regional Minister, Mr Joseph Amenowode, and the Ho Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Isaac Kodobisa, for failing to follow up on the projects.

Mr Anyidoho, however, said President Mills would never turn his back against ‘those whose hands have fertilised the womb of the earth.’

He said the region had witnessed significant improvement in terms of social and infrastructural development, adding that by the end of President Mills tenure all the promises would have been fulfilled.

Mr Anyidoho said although demonstrations and agitations were constitutional and democratic rights of individuals and groups, impressions should not be created that President Mills had abandoned his pledge to the good people of the Volta Region.

He said a lot of development projects had been completed while a lot more were nearing completion in the region.

He mentioned the Akatsi to Dzodze road, Abor Junction to Anyako, and Sogakope to Ho roads and a lot of schools as projects carried out in the region.

Underscoring the need for objectivity, Mr Anyidoho said it was the view of the President that ‘We have the right to express the way we feel about things, but to create the impression that nothing is happening under President Mills’s administration is unfair.’

Mr Anyidoho said the Eastern Corridor project to which a lot of resources had been committed and the university programmes would be the President’s flagship and would be used to demonstrate his commitment and pledge to the people of Volta Region.

‘The facts are clear that processes and procedures are being established. A lot is being done. There is the need for patience,’ he said.
