The National Youth Organiser of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Kwabena Bomfeh aka Kabila has declared that the voice on a tape on which some journalists are allegedly being ‘bribed’ to do stories favouring government is that of Deputy Minister for Information, Baba Jamal.
According to Kabila, although he is not a voice expert, he schooled with Baba Jamal and can identify his voice from afar so he can stick his neck out that the person speaking to the journalists is Baba Jamal.
Deputy Information Minister, Baba Jamal is reported to have met with some selected Journalists in the Upper East region and asked them to do stories that will favour the ruling government for which they will receive monthly salaries from the accounts of the National Youth Employment Program.
One of the journalists, who is the correspondent for Joy FM in the Upper East Region, Joseph Osei said he attended a meeting where they were told that government wanted to recruit freelance journalists and those without jobs and place them in state agencies under the NYEP.
He also stated that he was later given a recruitment letter from the NYEP from one of the journalists, Samuel Abaane
Baba Jamal has however denied that he is the person on the tape and has even threatened to take legal action against the Daily Guide which published the story.
He claimed that he had received intelligence that some people had brought some devices into the country which could make voices resemble that of other people.
That notwithstanding, The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), at a press conference on Thursday revealed the names of the journalists while also emphasizing that Baba Jamal was the one addressing the journalists.
Communications Director of the NPP, Nana Akomea stressed that if it was proven that the voice was not that of Baba Jamal, the party would apologise and Kabila seems to go with the NPP.
He stated that even though voice engineers could manipulate people’s voices he was certain that the particular voice is Baba Jamal.
However, a Presidential staffer, Benjamin Akyena Brentuo dismissed Kabila’s claims.
He argued that some elements in the NPP want the government to be unpopular and that is why they have come out with this tape.
