Liverpool owner John W Henry has revealed the club’s primary target is to qualify for the Champions League this season.

Henry’s Fenway Sports Group have bankrolled well over £40 million’s worth of signings this summer in addition to the £57m which brought strikers Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez to Anfield in January, leading many in the media to tip them for a tilt at the title this season.

The American was keen to play down such lofty expectations, but admitted he expects to be rewarded for his investment with a return to the top four and Champions League football.

Speaking to Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet as his club prepare for a friendly with Valerenga, Henry said: “It’s too early for us to start talking about winning the league.

“In my opinion Manchester United are the ones to beat. They have a good squad, and look really good.

“Our main goal is to qualify for the Champions League. If we don’t it would be a major disappointment.”
