Danny Welbeck hopes to see more first-team action with Manchester United this season after starring in their pre-season friendly win over Barcelona.

The young striker spent last season on loan at Sunderland but suffered a premature end to the season with a string of hamstring injuries.

Welbeck is happy to be back at Old Trafford and is pleased with how his pre-season has gone so far, as he looks to impress Sir Alex Ferguson enough to earn more starting places.

“I’ve been doing well in training so I was ready to step up once I got the chance,” he told MUTV.

“I’m delighted to be back at United and it’s gone well.”

The 20-year-old striker impressed during the win over Barcelona, playing Nani through on goal who finished with ease, and was happy with his performance.

“It’s a great experience coming out here and playing against the European champions,” he added. “They’re a great side and we did very well to get the result in the end.

“The first half went well, Nani was excellent and really carried the ball forward for us.

“We’re not used to having so little possession but against Barcelona you have to bide your time a bit and pounce when the time is right. It was a good team performance.”
