The Blues have a history of getting rid of their managers in quick succession, having had eight bosses in the last seven years.
The most recent in the line of tacticians to be sacked was Carlo Ancelotti, who lost his job after going trophyless last season – despite having won the Premier League and FA Cup double in 2010.
He was succeeded by Villas-Boas, and Terry told Chelsea Magazine: “Hopefully he can bring us a lot of trophies because he’s a fantastic manager. He’s learned from the best and he wants to be that.
“I’ve spoken to people at the club and they said as soon as they sat down and spoke with him they realised he was the right man for the job.
“So what we need now is stability. I stressed it a couple of years ago and we thought we had it when Carlo came in. Hopefully we have it now.”
He added: “The manager needs to be trusted. Everything needs to be his decision. If he gets that I’m sure we’ll get the stability I think the club needs.”
Terry has given his backing to the Portuguese boss by insisting that he can do all that is required of someone in his position.
“He’s the type of manager who can do everything,” Terry said. “He can let you know when he’s upset or when he’s pleased with you. He can pull you to one side and talk to you and he’s approachable. He wants to be the ideal manager and I think he’ll do well.”
