Turkey manager Guus Hiddink has called on Roman Abramovich to give new Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas a chance to make his mark at Stamford Bridge, claiming the club need stability now more than ever.

He told the club to look towards Manchester United as a case in point of success earned through consistency.

“If you look at United, they are the example that clubs need stability,’’ Hiddink told reporters.

“This is what Chelsea need as well. Carlo Ancelotti did well for the last two years but hopefully now, this decision to employ Villas-Boas will bring success for the upcoming time as well.”

Hiddink is still close friends with the Chelsea hierarchy and fans made calls for him to return to the club following the departure of Italian Ancelotti after a disappointing second season.

No discussions over the job were made however, claims the Dutchman.

“No, we didn’t have any contact about the specifics of the job,” he continued.

“The president of the Turkish FA came to me and said: ‘There are rumours about Chelsea. Please don’t think about leaving’.

“I told him there was nothing direct or concrete so I would not react.’’

When asked whether the age of the new Portuguese boss would be a problem, Hiddink said: “He did a great job last season and he should have an opportunity to work.

“It is a very young age but he has proved at Porto that he is good.

“The Premier League is different but young people must be given a chance. You can gain respect at 33 or 35. It depends on the quality of the manager and also his human qualities.

“Age does not have to mean the players consider him as a brother. If they feel he is straightforward and has good integrity he will be fine.”
