Liverpool midfielder Jay Spearing says he wants to achieve the kind of success that team-mates Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard have during their careers.

The 22-year-old made his competitive debut for the Reds in 2008, but found first-team football hard to come by and moved to Leicester City on loan for the second half of the 2009-10 campaign.

Following his return, the young midfielder went on to make 20 appearances in all competitions last season.

However, he looks set to find his first-team chances limited this season following the arrivals of Charlie Adam and Jordan Henderson, coupled with the return of Alberto Aquilani, who had been on loan at Juventus.

But Spearing has welcomed the competition for places in the squad, and has now outlined what he hopes to achieve during his career.

“They’ve Carragher and Gerrard have both helped me so much in my career and I want to go on and win trophies like they have,” he said.

“I want to look back on my career and say I achieved something like that and won the Champions League.”

The youngster’s views come ahead of the Reds’ friendly against Galatasaray in Turkey, where they famously won the Champions League final against AC Milan in 2005.

“I haven’t ever really spoken to Stevie or Carra much about that final,” Spearing said.

“But the fact they were there and played such a massive part in one of the club’s greatest ever nights is amazing.”

He added: “It will be the first time I’ve played in Turkey but I’ve heard all about the atmosphere at games there and I’m looking forward to experiencing that.

“Playing in Istanbul will be a special occasion, especially for those who were there on that night back in 2005.

“Fans in Turkey love their football and are always massively behind their side. It will be a great test for us.”
