Once upon a time electoral campaigns in Liberia centered on the ruling party. The electorates, out of the fear of government’s security machinery branding them “enemy of the state”, avoided opposition rallies. The outcome of such electoral processes had been autocratic governments, which, while paying lip service to democracy, promoted corruption as reward for citizens’ loyalty. Now all is changing – as Liberty Party’s Gbarpolu rally shows. The Analyst, reports.
Thousands of citizens, who have turned out at LP’s political rallies during a three-day tour of Gbarpolu County by the Brumskine-Siakor Ticket, have welcomed the LP presidential team and assured it of their unwavering support.
They assured the team of their preparedness and readiness to spread the good news of LP’s plan for Liberia and to serve as ambassadors for the party in explaining its platform to voters.
The Liberty Party Presidential campaign team, which Cllr. Charles Brumskine headed, visited all three electoral districts in the county, cruising through rough terrains in the county to explain the party’s vision to the citizens.
In their welcome statements delivered by their elders, the citizens said the holistic embrace of the LP platform was the first massive citizens’ support for a party’s vision for the reconstruction of Liberia, a country that they said was in dire need of growth and repair.
Addressing the rally, Liberty Party’s representative aspirant for district #3, J. K. Arman, chronicled the history of Tahpoima and Weasue clans and revealed that the area, although rich in natural resources, was underdeveloped.
He recalled that presidents Tolbert, Doe, and now Sirleaf, left the people of the district in a state of neglect.
Various citizen groupings, making remarks in Tahpoima Clan, appraised the visit of the Brumskine-Siakor Ticket as an assurance that their area was being recognized as part of Liberia, as this was the first time a presidential and vice presidential ticket was visiting with them.
Rallying the citizens to the cause of Liberia and rousing them up to LP’s vision, Liberty Party’s Standard-bearer, Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskine, told citizens of Gbarpolu that Liberia was about to embrace the dawn of an era that would make Liberians experience the benefit of their vast natural resources after many years of neglect.
Cllr. Brumskine told the Gbarpolu citizens that what Liberia needed today was a national leadership that was prepared to restrain itself by not indulging in the evils that have always characterized successive Liberian leaderships to the extent that they could not put high premium on the well-being of the citizens.
He assured the citizens that a Brumskine-Siakor ticket presented the best opportunity for a self-less leadership, judging from their private and public service records.
The Liberty Party leader emphasized that Liberia’s post-war development agenda would not make any strides in the absence of genuine reconciliation. This, he said, was lacking in the current administration of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.
He promised that a Liberty Party government would ensure that Liberians were brought into the mainstream of national development by, among other things, providing free primary education for Liberian children.
Also, he said, the government would ensure that Liberian businesses have easy access to loans schemes, guaranteed by national government, that would provide minimum allowance for the aged (people above 65 years) whether or not they have worked for government.
Besides, he said, the government would reform the land policy to give ownership rights to rural dwellers who are simply regarded as custodians of land areas they occupy.
Cllr. Brumskine said those will form the main crux of the party’s reconciliation strategy.
He discounted skeptics’ assertion that these commitments were too ambitious to be realized. The Liberty Party leader maintained that Liberia’s enduring problem has always been the absence of a strong leadership to demonstrate a high sense of integrity in governance.
Brumskine assured that a Liberty Party government will do all it can to make corruption an expensive venture so that much needed state resources will be saved to cater to social program.
