Chelsea have made a formal complaint to the Malaysian FA over the racist abuse midfielder Yossi Benayoun was subjected to during the club’s pre-season tour of the country.
The Israeli midfielder was jeered by sections of the crowd during Thursday’s clash with a Malaysian XI in Kuala Lumpur, a game in which Didier Drogba scored in a 1-0 victory for the west Londoners.
With Malaysia a largely Muslim country, the club has concluded the abuse from a minority of the crowd towards Benayoun was anti-Semitic.
A statement issued by Chelsea on Wednesday night said: “Notwithstanding most fans behaving appropriately on the night, we believe Yossi was subjected to anti-Semitic abuse by a number of supporters at the game.
“Such behaviour is offensive, totally unacceptable and has no place in football.”
