Chelsea‘s new Belgian international goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has passed a medical with Atletico Madrid.

Courtois travelled to Madrid last night having also succeeded in overcoming a medical examination with the Premier League side, who want to give the former Racing Genk man experience in order to groom him as Petr Cech’s successor.

“From the manner with which they negotiated with Chelsea, as well as my agent, I got the impression that they really want me in Madrid,” Courtois told TV Limburg last night.

An official announcement of the complex deal is imminent, with Chelsea paying Belgian champions Genk around £7.9 million for the 19-year-old’s services before farming him out to Atletico Madrid, who need a goalkeeper following the departure of David de Gea to Manchester United.

Coach Gregorio Manzano said: “The loan deal for Courtois is exactly what we needed to ensure that we have good cover in goal. We want guarantees in case anything goes wrong with our current goalkeepers.”
