Kenya: Sofapaka Break Ranks to Defend Their FKL Cup

Football Kenya Ltd Cup champions Sofapaka became the latest top flight club to confirm their participation in the tournament whose first round matches were marred by match cancellations. “The opportunity to play in the Confederations Cup opened up opportunities for some of our players like Humphrey Mieno so we felt it was in the interest of the club and the players for us to defend our title,” said club President Elly Kalekwa

Sofapaka however, have asked FKL to reimburse them the expenses they incurred when they travelled to Mwingi for their encounter which never took off. “We demand that FKL refund our Sh78,000 spent in preparations and travelling for the match because as the organising body they should have inspected the match venue before the match,” he added.

Should their demand be met, Sofapaka are scheduled to play their first round opponents Migwani United next Wednesday in Thika town.

Playing in the tournament will go against a decision by the governing council of all premier league clubs and will force the champions to pay a fine of Sh50,000. Gor Mahia did the same when they played Timsales in the first round. Meanwhile yesterday Sofapaka were due to receive three points without breaking sweat against Ulinzi Stars who are still in Brazil for the World Military Games.
