Rwanda is looking for an investor to fund the construction of Bugesera International Airport.

Minister of infrastructure, Vincent Karega was qouted by local newspaper The New Times saying that the search for partners has began.

Karega said a detailed study and preparation of Bill of Quantities for the next phase of construction will begin when the government identifies a financier.

‘It will happen – if all preliminaries (including mobilising of finance and importing equipment) are closed by the end 2011, then from 2012, up to 2015, or 2016, we shall have the airport,’ said Karega.

The airport will be located in southeastern Rwanda, in Bugesera District and will be Rwanda’s largest International Airport when complete, serving commercial flights destined to and from the greater Kigali metropolitan area. It will also be Rwanda’s third international airport and the country’s eighth.

Bugesera airport will cost US$635-million and is expected expected to handle 1 million passengers per year.
