Darren Bent has assured Aston Villa fans that he has no plans to leave the club.

The 27-year-old, who joined from Sunderland in January in a deal that could rise to £24 million, helped the team avoid the drop last season and scored nine goals in 16 appearances.

This summer has seen Stewart Downing and Ashley Young leave for Liverpool and Manchester United respectively, but Bent insists he has not thought about following suit and is happy to stay.

He told Sky Sports: “Obviously what Stewie and Ash did was for their careers – Manchester United and Liverpool are two of the biggest clubs in the world, so they’ve got their reasons for doing it.

“But me, I’m more than happy to be here and play for Aston Villa. It’s a terrific football club.

“I’d like to be here for the long haul. I want to build on that and hopefully this season will be as successful as last.”
