The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has said the National Universities Commission (NUC) should be held responsible for the rise in the number of illegal institutions making easy money from thousands of unsuspecting Nigerians.
NANS president Comrade Jude Imagwe said NUC whose responsibility it is to accredit institutions is in a hurry to give license of operation to several institutions without due procedure.
Imagwe said, “NUC cannot be totally exonerated from the existence of these mushroom institutions that we have around the country because the criteria upon which these institutions are accredited at the first instance are not even made known to the general public. .
“The NUC should wake up to its responsibilities and the challenges. Yes, we are aware that we need several expansions or institutions to accommodate the high number of people that are (being) turned out from secondary schools on yearly basis, but again, even if we are in dire need of such expansion, we should not be in a hurry to have expansion that is not based on solid foundation; solid foundation in the sense that you don’t just wake up one morning, and have three blocks or an empty space of land accredited as a university when there are no facilities for the pursuit of (some sensitive) courses that are accredited,” he said.
