Nairobi — A Kenyan is among a crew of 16 that were hijacked by pirates on board a UAE-flagged oil tanker.

Seafarers Assistance Programme coordinator Andrew Mwangura said Mt Jubba was captured approximately 220 nautical miles northwest of Socotra, Yemen, last Thursday while heading to the Somali coast.

Mr Mwangura said the crew members comprised one Sri Lankan, Sudanese, Myanmar, and a Kenyan.

The others were four Somalis, five Indians and three Bangladeshis.

Mr Mwangura said a military helicopter was monitoring the situation, adding:

“We have learned that the crew in the ship is in good health and the pirates were in communication with the owners of the ship.”

He said that negotiation for ransom had not started with the Sharjah-based Jubba General Trading Company.

Mt Jubba is a regular caller to Berbera sea port, and she operates between UAE and Berbera.
