Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson believes the race for the Premier League will be more open than ever next season, with up to six teams in contention for the title.

The Red Devils manager says the traditional top four of United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool will all be challenging for the title again, as well as Manchester City and Tottenham.

“We used to talk about a top four, with ourselves, Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool,” Sir Alex told reporters.

“You can’t say that any more. Manchester City have definitely come into the frame. They have a buying power better than the rest of us.

“Maybe having the run in the European Cup just stretched Tottenham too much last season and they ended up being out of the top four.

“But you look at those teams and say any one of them could win the league.”

Sir Alex has already brought in Phil Jones, Ashley Young and David de Gea to bolster his squad at Old Trafford, and Wesley Sneijder has continued to be linked with a move to the club.

The United boss, who guided his side to a record 19th top-flight title last season, believes the experience of the players already at the club will prove vital.

“We know it is going to be such a big challenge again this season,” he added.

“It never changes. It is not an easy league to win. But we have experience of winning it. That helps.”
