A boda boda operator died on Tuesday night after he was knocked down by a trailer near Kibarani along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway. Coast Traffic boss Joshua Omukata said the truck overturned when the driver lost control after hitting the cyclist.

The 9pm incident caused a traffic jam along the highway. “We are still carrying out investigations to find out the real cause of the accident. The driver of the trailer escaped with minor injuries and was treated and discharged at the Coast Provincial General Hospital,” he said. Omukata urged the motorists to observe traffic laws and ensure their vehicles are in good condition to avoid accidents.

He warned bodaboda operators who have not attended driving training that they will be arrested. “We are still investigating the cause of the accident. At the moment I cannot tell what led to the accident but motorists should exercise caution when on the highway and observe the traffic code of conduct and rules to avoid such road carnages,” he said.

He advised the long-distance truck drivers to have enough rest before setting off for their journeys saying fatigue contributes to many of these accidents.
