Windhoek — The Namibian Beach Volleyball Teams will be leaving for Maputo, Mozambique tomorrow to compete in the three-day Zonal phase of the CAVB Continental Beach Volleyball Cup starting on Friday.
Namibia will be participating with the combination of Rector Mbeha / Mwita Sikopo and Heiko Diehl / Joel Matheus in the men’s competition while Anita Kinder / Simone von Wietersheim and Karin Curschmann / Julia Laggner will represent Namibia in the ladies event.
Namibia is part of Group E in the Continental Cup, alongside Zambia, Mauritius, Madagascar, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Swaziland, Botswana, Lesotho and Malawi. All countries except Botswana and Lesotho have confirmed their participation for this weekend’s tourney.
The top 4 teams from this Zonal tournament will qualify for the next round where they will be joined by 16 other African nations. In the next round, teams will be divided into 4 groups of 5, from which only 2 teams from each group qualify for the final phase. These 8 countries will then play in the final phase, in which the winner will directly qualify for the Olympic Games 2012. Second and third places will qualify for The FIVB World Cup to earn a second chance at qualifying for the Olympic Games 2012.
Therefore, Namibia’s main aim for this upcoming tournament is to finish among the top 4 teams in their group in both the men’s and ladies competition. “I believe South Africa will once again be the team to beat, after the won both the Continental Cup Sub-Zonal as well as the All Africa Games Qualification Tournament earlier this year. A place on the podium for the Namibian teams and with that the qualification for the next phase is however realistic”, NVF president, Heiko Diehl, commented.
The Namibian teams will be accompanied by Heiko Kesselmann as team manager and Tomas Edward as referee.
