Anders Lindegaard is happy to receive first-team football at the beginning of pre-season for Manchester United.

With David de Gea still to join the squad for their tour of the USA, the Dane started in goal in United’s 4-1 win over the New England Revolution on Wednesday.

“It is nice to start the new season with a new game and it is nice to play the first game of course,” said Lindegaard.

While Lindegaard is unlikely to push De Gea for a regular starting spot this season, the 27-year-old recognises the competition for playing time during pre-season.

“That is how should be,” he said. “It will make ourselves better and it will heighten the quality for the whole team. In the end it’s all about the team, its about being as good as possible for the team.”

Wayne Rooney, who played the first half against the New England Revolution, says he is looking forward to fighting to keep his first-team place this season.

“It is exciting,” he said. “Everyone needs to be at the top of their game to keep their place on the team.”
