Nairobi — Huge parcels of military land are in the hands of private developers after being illegally allocated.

The grabbing occurred over the years, dating back to the 1990s where politically connected people schemed to alienate the land set aside for the military, Lands Minister James Orengo told a Parliamentary committee.

According to information before the Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations, officials from the Ministry of Lands were also involved in the grabbing deals.

    Asked for more time

The information came out as Mr Orengo met the committee chaired by Wajir West MP Adan Keynan.

The minister asked for more time, up to a month to furnish the committee with further information.

Among the beneficiaries of the illegal allocations is Sololo Outlets and Nyumbani Children of God, which received huge portions of land.

Sololo was allocated 1,246 hectares out of Embakasi barracks.

The same land is being claimed by the Nairobi City Council as well as four other private developers.
