Former President Kufuor with Nana Yaa BrefoFormer President Kufuor has dismissed suggestions that he did not campaign for the NPP’s flag bearer candidate for the 2008 elections, Nana Akufo-Addo because he was not interested in seeing Nana Addo win.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Nana Yaa Brefo, host of Adom TV’s morning show, Badwam on Multi TV, the former President said contrary to suggestions that he did not help Nana Addo with his campaign, he was actively involved in the latter’s campaign.

“If there was anyone praying for Nana and helping him in every way possible for him to be my successor, I was the one,” he told Nana Yaa.

“I did everything I had to do for my little brother. Considering where God had taken me, I was not going to leave a mess behind. I did whatever needed to be done to help one’s party and candidate to win power [so] it is not true that I said I would give it to just anyone.”

Explaining how involved he was with Nana Addo’s 2008 campaign, the former President said he was on his way to Tain to campaign for the flagbearer when he was told that the latter had gone to court to seek an injunction to stop the elections.

“I had made arrangements for people to speak with the chiefs, elders and the youth to get them to vote for him [Nana] so that we can retain power. Nana then came and said he had gone to court to restrain the Electoral Commission from holding the elections.”

He noted that with just about a week or two to the constitutionally mandated date for handing over, on January 7, there was little he could do about the action taken by Nana Addo.
