Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is delighted with the club’s business in the transfer market.

The former Wigan boss has made nine signings, including Manchester United duo Wes Brown and John O’Shea, and is happy with the way the club have operated this summer, having added to the overall size of the squad despite losing six players.

Bruce told the club’s official website: “The balance of the squad looks very healthy.

“We lost six players from the squad and we knew we were going to have to be busy in the transfer market. To bring in nine players is unbelievable, when you see what most other teams have done.”

He added: “I’m delighted with what we have done during the summer. The phone has been hot and the transfers we’ve got over the line are terrific.”

Sunderland resumed training earlier this week, and the manager admitted that he was keen to bring key players into the squad before pre-season began in earnest.

“We’ve added the players now so we can work with them all throughout pre-season,” continued Bruce.

“‘I’m very pleased with what we have done. There’s been no other clubs as busy as us and I’m looking forward to the season starting.”
