NORTHERN REGIONAL Minister, Moses Bukari Mabengba has blamed Ghana’s under development and the upsurge in unemployment on a checkered governance that has existed in the country since it gained republican status on July 1, 1960.

He noted that the country was well endowed but was poorly managed emphasizing the need for dedicated, responsible and committed leadership to regain its former status.

He said Ghana deserves better in terms of infrastructure, healthcare delivery, education and good road networks to promote development in all spheres of the economy.

Addressing senior citizens in the region as part of activities commemorating the country’s 51st Republic Day celebrations in Tamale, Mr. Mabengba advised that lessons must be learnt from our checkered history with regards to governance in order to restore self-confidence in the citizenry.

He added that this will help build the country and create more jobs to promote development and reduce unemployment.

The minister commended the senior citizens for their meritorious activities for the country but expressed worry that successive generations had failed to maintain what was bequeathed them by the older generation.

He bemoaned the lack of maintenance culture by the citizenry calling for attitudinal change in order to save public properties from complete collapse.

“The challenge is not how many kilometers of roads we can build, but how well we maintain them,” he remarked.

Mr. Mabengba also appealed for concerted efforts in protecting the environment by stopping indiscriminate lumbering and crude methods of fishing in order to save the nation’s natural resources.

He concluded by calling on residents to endeavour to make Ghana self-reliant and wealthy.

Distinguished retired civil servants of the region were awarded with certificates and other packages and served with sumptuous meals.
