Kenyan Premier League side Gor Mahia have been slapped a hefty fine of Sh1.5m by the KPL Independent Disciplinary and Complaints Committee (IDCC). The fine was meted on the club following the abandonment of their match against Ulinzi Stars where several people were injured and property belonging to a number of partners destroyed.
“In our ruling, we held inter alia that Gor Mahia fans caused the abandonment of the said match contrary to the stated rules of Kenyan Football,” read the IDCC ruling in part. “We further held that Gor Mahia was liable to pay for the medical expenses and reasonable compensation for any intentional injuries, property damage or loss suffered by the various claimants.”
When reached for comment, Gor Mahia secretary general Nikanur Arum said he was not in a position to comment forthwith on what step the club will take following the ruling.
“I wish not to comment on this matter right now since we have not reviewed the ruling as a club,” said Arum. “We will probably meet next week in an executive meeting where we will make our position known.” However, he observed that the club has the right to either comply with the decision or contest it through the available avenues.
Among those to be compensated are Ulinzi Stars, who had their bus’ windows smashed (Sh1m), Sports Stadia Management Board (Sh500,000), Avenue Rescue (Sh6,600) and Standard Group journalist Robin Toskin (Sh13,300).
