Sofapaka start their FKL Cup title defence with a date against Migwani United in Mwingi this afternoon. Watoto wa Mungu, who beat AFC Leopards in last year’s final remain the favourites against the Nationwide Division Two League outfit in the Group A matches to be played today.
The tournament starts off with 14 matches on the card today as runners up AFC Leopards face Western Kenya Sugar at Bukhungu.
City Stadium will host the match between Tusker against GFC 105 while Naivasha based Karuturi Sports welcomes Eldoret Umeme.
Thika United will be up against Nationwide Division Two League outfit Ol-Njorwa at the Kingfisher grounds while struggling KPL side Bandari face Longonot FC at Oserian. The other KPL strugglers Congo United face Kisumu Municipal at the Mbaraki Sports Stadium. The fixtures released on Thursday will also pit Kibera Celtic against KRA FC today at City Stadium (3pm).
At Kingfisher grounds, Homegrown welcome Nyeri Stima while Nationwide Division One League bottom-placed Real Kisumu entertain Eastleigh Youth at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu.
Administration Police, who also ply their trade in the Nationwide Division 1 League will be up against Kaya Zosi at the Mombasa Municipal Stadium while Nanyuki will see hosts Nanyuki Sportiff up against Bidco United.
Meanwhile, the KPL fixture pitting Gor Mahia and Sony Sugar has been postponed until further notice following a Kenyan Premier League governing council decision today in Mombasa.
The hosting of the match was surrounded with confusion with KPL insisting the match be held at Afraha while Sony, being the home team, wanted it played at their Awendo backyard. KPL officials had cited safety concerns and logistical reasons much to the chagrin of the sugar millers.
The news of the postponement of the match was not taken lightly by Awendo fans, who insisted that they have what it takes to host Gor Mahia and any other team at their backyard. “We are capable of handling Gor Mahia and any number of fans here in Awendo and we still want to host the match at home,” said a Sony official who sought anonymity.
