A TEACHER at the Dibasen Junior Secondary School in Okombahe has laid a charge of assault against the Head of Department (HoD) after an incident last week in which the teacher was allegedly cursed and pushed around for a mistake made in a class register.

According to the teacher, Loyola Maveoro, she brought the register to the HoD, Julia Chaka’s office, where a mistake in the register was apparently pointed out.

“Chaka threw me with the register and told me to take this rubbish out of her office. She then started jerking at me and then pushed me out. I told her I did not want to fight her, and asked why she was behaving like that toward me,” Maveoro told the newspaper.

The Namibian did get confirmation that a case of assault was opened by Maveoro at the police.

After the Maveoro left to speak to the headmaster at the school about the incident, Chaka allegedly grabbed her again and started pushing her around “as if she wanted to taunt me into a fight”, Maveoro claimed.

She said that she could not understand why a senior member of the staff would treat a junior member the way she had been treated. Maveoro has been at Dibasen since 2008.

The matter is now being investigated by the police.

The headmaster of Dibasen, Anton Howaeb, said he was aware of the incident, but not that the matter would be taken to the police.

“It was definitely something that could have been solved internally. I’ve been here 15 years and this is not the first such an incident. We try and solve things here,” he told the newspaper.

He would not divulge what led to the incident, but said going to the police was “not professional”.
