Zambian international Davies Mwape and Hamis Kiiza scored a goal apiece to give Mainland champions Young Africans a 2-0 win over Somalia’s Elman in the Kagame Castle Cup match at the National Stadium yesterday.

Yanga, seeking their first win in the regional tournament, made a bright start. They forced three corners in the first three minutes that bore no fruit.Still fighting, Sam Timbe’s lads fluffed a number of easy chances in the first 25 minutes, the main culprits being Julius Mrope, Rashid Gumbo, Davies Mwape, Kenneth Asamoah and Kiggi Makasy.

After a series of missed chances, the match finally came into life in the 27th minute when Mwape registered his name in the score sheet, concluding a neat one-two between Gumbo and substitute Godfrey Taita with a tricky shot.

On resumption, Elman put Yanga at bay in the first six minutes, but a combination of poor finishing and poor coordination upfront let them down.The game seemed destined to end in a 1-0 score until deep into injury time when Kiiza made it 2-0, sending the Dar es Salaam team’s fans into wild celebrations.

Yanga, who battled to a 2-2 draw with El Merreikh of Sudan in their first match, now have four points from two games.Earlier, El Merreikh drew 1-1 with Uganda’s Bunamwaya in another Group B match at the same venue.

In Morogoro, Ethiopia’s St George defied the odds to stun defending champions APR of Rwanda 3-1 in a thrilling Group C match at the Jamhuri Stadium, reports Correspondent Dorris Maliyaga.
