The Pathology Department of the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH) Wednesday took delivery of two freezers donated by TK Motors.

The donated items were received by the minister of Health and Social Welfare, Fatim Badjie, at a presentation ceremony held at the RVTH grounds in Banjul. The freezers are meant for the hospital’s morgue, and according to medical experts, each is expected to contain at least six bodies. Receiving the items, minister Badjie described the donation as significant, saying it shows that Gambians and the people living in the country care for one another. She said that the donors of the items did it on humanitarian grounds, while further describing the gift as very special to the ministry.

Minister Badjie dilated on the importance of the freezers, pointing out that sometimes, the identification process could take some time in the mortuary, as bodies need to be identified and taken to the right places. She added that this kind of intervention will pave the way for others who are willing to render help to do so without any request from the ministry. “Today is a happy day for us and I am sure everyone here is excited,” she said, adding that TK Motors has been a longtime partner of the government of The Gambia.

For his part, Sana Dahaba, the permanent secretary, Ministry of Health and Social Welfare expressed delight at the gesture, describing it as a major boost for the hospital. He stated that this kind of initiative is always welcomed by the ministry, and shows the commitment of TK Motors to nation building. He expressed hope that the relationship between the ministry and the donors would move from strength to strength. He finally thanked them for the assistance.

Ousman Nyang, the chief medical director of RVTH described the move by TK Motors as commendable, while noting that the Pathology Department under the good leadership of Professor Khalil is operating smoothly. He acknowledged that the materials are vital to the mortuary, as the population of the country is increasing rapidly. He also thanked the donors for the gesture.

For his part, Professor Khalil M .I .A Khalil of the Pathology Department of RVTH expressed similar sentiments. Presenting the Freezers, Mousa Mousa, the managing director of T K Motors said that he and his brother deemed it very necessary to help the hospital. He explained that they decided to donate the items for the interest of the public, after they learnt that the hospital has been operating for six months now without an effective mortuary. He finally thanked the Health Ministry for appreciating the gesture, and said he hopes the partnership will continue.
