Patrice Evra is confident the new signings at Manchester United can help the club go one better this season in the Champions League.

The side reached the final of the competition last season but their hopes of taking the trophy home were scuppered by an outstanding Barcelona performance, and they went down 3-1 at Wembley.

Ashley Young, Phil Jones and David de Gea have all joined Old Trafford in the past month and Evra believes retaining the Premier League title and taking on the rest of Europe will be the team’s challenge.

“I think they are great signings,” Evra said on a club trophy promotional tour in China.

“We will give them all a nice welcome. I think they’ll be important and I’m very confident about the future.

“After we lost the Champions League final I said that we had lost just a game.

“But I’m confident about the future, especially with our great new signings, and I think we are going to win it next year.

“We hope to retain the title but also to win the Champions League.”

Samir Nasri, who is entering the last year of his contract at Arsenal, has also been linked with a move to Manchester United, however, that transfer could be ruined by ‘noisy neighbours’ Manchester City, who have entered the fray to sign from the Gunners.

Interest from the Premier League title holders is reportedly going to step-up, however, with the hole left by Paul Scholes’s departure needing to be filled by manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

In May, Evra publicly told the French international: “Each year you are playing to win. That is Manchester’s culture.

“If he comes, he has to know there is no room for mistakes.”
