Prof. Agyemang Badu says lack of government attention to the sector and lack of funds has led to the decline of education in Ghana.
He was speaking on a special edition of Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM on Thursday, dedicated to the Institute’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
According to him, Ghana’s education sector was on the same level as countries like Singapore, Korea and Malaysia but now they are far ahead of Ghana because of proper structures they have put in place to enhance education.
Prof Badu said teachers previously accepted posting to the hinterlands but because of lack of government interest in improving the system, they are not ready to go anymore.
He said it’s about time government comes up with prudent strategies to improve the sector to meet international standards.
He added that government needs to invest more funds into the education sector because of the increasing numbers of children of school-going age in the country, suggesting that the budgetary allocations to the sector be doubled so everybody can benefit from it and structures can be enhanced.
Prof Agyemang Badu also called on institutions to upgrade their knowledge base and skills so that they can be abreast with modern trends of teaching or tutoring.
GIMPA Law School
Meanwhile, GIMPA has established a Law School which will take off in the next academic year.
The First Dean of the Law School, Prof Kwame Frimpong announced that the institution has begun enrollment.
He said the decision to establish the Law faculty is in response to the numerous calls by stakeholders adding that the School’s curriculum is in line with the certified requirements.
He said although 72 applicants were shortlisted for the programme, only 28 reported and have been enrolled.
Prof Kwame Frimpong also announced that the Institute will soon begin a modular programme which will enable those living outside Accra to enroll for the three-year law programme, adding there will be added courses in Paralegal Studies.
