Tottenham fans would probably have been hoping for more than the solitary signing of Brad Friedel on a free transfer by this stage of the summer window.
Manager Harry Redknapp wants three top players to challenge for a top four finish next season but has been told he will first have to sell fringe players such as Robbie Keane, David Bentley and Alan Hutton.
Following their failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League, other clubs have shown considerable interest in Tottenham’s best players, most notably Croatian playmaker Luka Modric who has declared his desire to move this summer. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy insists Modric will not be sold to any club, ‘at any price’, despite an initial £22 million bid from Chelsea and rival interest from Manchester United.
Redknapp’s priority this summer – armed with £27.3m prize money from last season’s Champions League – is to sign two new strikers. All four of the club’s current forwards are up for sale and Spurs want to bring in at least one proven goalscorer, with the likes of Giuseppe Rossi, Radamel Falcao and Didier Drogba all considered as targets. Leandro Damiao, the Internacional striker, is expected to join at some stage this summer in a £12m deal.
The key for Spurs this summer is whether they can sign a striker in the next two months who can score 20 goals a season and fire the club back into the Champions League. The Londoners are also looking to sign a commanding central defender and a midfielder and have held talks over moves for Gary Cahill and Scott Parker.

Meanwhile, Tobi Oluwakayode wants to see Harry Redknapp conduct a mass clear-out at White Hart Lane, and sell David Bentley, Robbie Keane, Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Sebastien Bassong, Niko Kranjcar, Alan Hutton, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Jermaine Jenas.
