Aston Villa reportedly want to sign Real Madrid youngster Sergio Canales on a season-long loan.

According to The Mirror, the attacking midfielder is a big transfer target for new manager Alex McLeish, who is looking to fill the void left by departed winger Ashley Young, who left for Manchester United last week.

Canales, 20, is being chased by Premier League side Everton as well, but a move to Villa Park is seen as the best option.

Real are also said to be hesitant about loaning the Spain Under-21 player, who was not involved in the squad for the European Under-21 Championships, to La Liga clubs Villarreal and Atletico Madrid.

The midfielder, who can play in a number of positions, joined the Spanish giants a year ago from Racing Santander but has not seen regular football under manager Jose Mourinho.

Allowing Canales first-team football at an established side such as Villa would be of preference to both the player and the Madrid hierarchy.

McLeish is yet to make his first signing as Villa boss but is willing to travel over to Spain to finalise the loan deal and discuss terms with the starlet.

If Canales is to make the move, it is reported that he wants the negotiations finished before he heads to Brazil to compete in the Fifa Under-20 World Cup finals, which begin at the end of July.
