David de Gea has confirmed that he has been in contact with Manchester United as his move from Atletico Madrid to Old Trafford gathers pace.
The Spanish goalkeeper was in Manchester on Monday for a medical, and reports have suggested that a deal is set to be completed.
The 20-year-old took to Twitter to confirm the reports, saying: “I have been invited by Man U to see the club and the city with my family and to be given an offer.”
It now seems certain that the promising talent will replace the now retired Edwin van der Sar at Old Trafford, and in doing so will push Sir Alex Ferguson’s summer spending beyond the £50 million mark.
The manager has moved swiftly in the close season to reinforce his team, with Phil Jones and Ashley Young joining from Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa respectively.
