Swansea City have rejected a bid from Newcastle United for left-back Neil Taylor as they see him as an important part of their future.

Newcastle had lodged a bid as they thought that Taylor had a release clause in his contract but it has since been found not to be the case and Swansea have decided the player will stay with them.

Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins believes Taylor is a good young player who will help the club grow in the Premier League.

A statement on the club’s official website reads: “We recognise Neil as a young, talented Welsh player that has an important role to play at this club.

“We brought him here from Wrexham and have helped nurture his development. He adjusted very well to the Championship last season and we look forward to seeing him play a big role as we enter the Premier League.

“That is why we have rejected Newcastle’s bid. We have a big challenge ahead in the Premier League, but together we can maintain the progress made by this club over the last few years.”

Jenkins also says that Taylor has been made aware of the decision and has not taken issue with the club’s stance.

He added: “I spoke to Neil’s agent today and he understands the situation.”
