SWAPO Party chief whip Peter Katjavivi called for the immediate and unconditional cessation of aggression and a withdrawal of Nato forces from Libyan territory.
In a notion of motion in Parliament on Wednesday, Katjavivi proposed that the National Assembly give full support to the United Nations and African Union (AU) in their efforts to ensure peace and security in the beleaguered nation that has spiralled into a civil war that threatens to split the country in two.
He said Parliament should express its “strongest disapproval” of the military aggression of Nato forces in the bombing of public facilities, infrastructure and residential sites and the targeted assassination of national leaders in Libya.
Katjavivi also expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation and military operations by Nato in Libya, which he said are causing deaths and injury to innocent civilians.
“We encourage the Libyan parties to the conflict to fully cooperate with the African Union to bring about lasting peace and stability in that African country,” said Katjavivi.
He said Parliament should reaffirm the AU’s road map for a peaceful resolution of the crisis and the motion of the Pan-African Parliament of May 2011.
The AU called for dialogue before the United Nations Security Resolution 1970 and 1973, and after those resolutions.
The AU road map proposes an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of a transition period, but is said to fail to clarify Muammar Gaddafi’s role in the future of Libya.
The rebels in Benhazi has rejected the road map and demanded Gaddafi’s departure.
