‘It’s my dream to play in the Premier League’ – Wolfsburg midfielder Diego reveals desire for move to England

Wolfsburg midfielder Diego has revealed it is his “dream” to play in the Premier League as he prepares to leave the Bundesliga club this summer.

Great things were expected of the 26-year-old playmaker when he joined Wolfsburg for just under £14 million from Juventus last summer, but he failed to make any real impact on a struggling side which ultimately avoided relegation from Germany’s top flight by a mere two points.

Poor performances and questions over his attitude have failed to endear Diego to the Wolfsburg faithful, and the Brazil international confirmed his intention to leave this summer as he has no future at the Volkswagen Arena next season under current coach Felix Magath.

“I think Felix Magath and myself share very different ideas from each other,” he told the Independent.

“Of course I respect him because he is the boss but it has been difficult for us to work together. We have sat down and talked and we both think it’s best if I move on.

“I prefer not to mention the names of clubs out of respect for the managers and the owners but it’s true that there is contact with some clubs in England,” he continued.

“Of course I will give these offers special attention because it’s my dream to play in the Premier League.

“At this moment England is where I want to play.”

“We are just starting to have conversations with clubs so it’s too early to say where I will be going, but it would be perfect if I can play in the Premier League.”

Diego’s latest announcement is likely to put top Premier League clubs on high alert. He almost moved to England back in 2003, but a proposed £7.6m deal to take him to Tottenham fell through as a result of passport issues.

The 26-year-old is not sure what sort of price Wolfsburg will set for possible suitors, but he is confident the club will not stand in the way of his exit should they receive a reasonable offer.  

“I have no idea in this moment of the exact fee but I think because Wolfsburg and myself both want the same solution it will not be so difficult,” he added.

“When everybody wants the same outcome it makes things easier but I have not been told a number yet.”
