Foreign Affairs Minister At 19th Executive Council Session in Malabo

27 June 2011 Addis Ababa — The 4,200-strong Ethiopian brigade due to be deployed on a proposed peace-keeping mission in Sudan's troubled Abyei region will focus on civilian protection, according to the Ethiopian government. "Ethiopia will deploy one brigade of troops to Abyei after both Northern and Southern Sudan fully withdraw their forces from the region," said Ambassador Dina Mufti of the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. "The troops will give priority to keep the peace and security of civilians living in the region, along with the infrastructure." On 23 June, the USA submitted a draft UN resolution authorizing a peace-keeping mission of Ethiopian troops to be deployed in Abyei on the basis of a 20 June agreement between the Sudanese government and Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM).

Malabo — The Angolan Foreign Affairs Minister, Georges Chikoty, is attending as from Sunday the 19th ordinary session of the executive council that is preparing 17th ordinary conference of the African Union (AU) in Malabo city in Equatorial Guinea.

During the opening of the meeting on Sunday, Georges Chikoty spoke and highlighted the current situation in Libya and Côte d’Ivoire, matters that are topping the conference.

The meeting is preparing the extraordinary session of the Council of Minister of the AU set for 28 June, thus preceding the 17th conference to happen from 30 June to 1 July in Malabo.

The conference, which happening under the motto “Accelerate the Youth’s Skill for the Sustainable Development” expects to discuss the reports on state of peace and security in Africa and the UN Reforms.

The heads of state and government will analyse the proposals on the need of keeping and respecting the decisions of the summit by all states, establishment of Jaques Diouf award for Food Security, Support to the resolution of the 66th ordinary session of the UN general assembly to forbid female genital mutilation in the world, project of creating an African Excellence Centre in Information Technologies and Communication in Tunis in Tunisia.

The summit will adopt the decisions and recommendations of 18th ordinary session of the consultative council.
